Hello, my name is Jordan Hutton. I am starting this blog to document my thoughts and journey through gear and the world. I hope that you enjoy my experiments and opinions on all the things that matter to me and bring me joy in my life. The topics will likely be centered on skis and bikes but will also spill over to anything in my life I think critically about. I will aim to provide citations when possible to bolster the points I am trying to convey or when I am directly using or referencing another’s work.
The title of the blog comes from a term that I see most used in the cycling world. The term “Retro Grouch” is used as pejorative for ribbing someone who thinks little to nothing new is good, and prefers to stick with the older components or methods even if they teeter into the realms archaic and or masturbatory.
The research lab component will be either direct experiments taking on theories and hypothesis, or simply reflections on ideas and products.
Even though I’m calling the blog RgRL I don’t think true retro grouches would consider me a retro grouch. Modernity does have convenient and compelling things to offer. I gravitate towards the term and its ethos because older tech tends to be more simple, durable, and serviceable than modern gear and those are qualities I put on a pedestal.
I hope you enjoy what I have to say.
Sincerely,
-Jordan
